The National Council for Higher Education today held a cordial and productive consultative meeting with the Vice Chancellors of Universities, Rectors and Principals of Other Degree Awarding Institutions regarding issues of accreditation and re-assessment of programmes. Fifty (50) Vice Chancellors and thirteen (13) Rectors /Principals Institutions attended the meeting. There was convergence on the issues at hand.
The Vice Chancellors through the Chairperson of the Uganda Vice Chancellors’ Forum, Prof. George Openjuru, who is also the Vice Chancellor of Gulu University, presented resolutions that arose from the extra-ordinary meeting of the Uganda Vice Chancellors’ Forum, held on May 29 2023 and these included the following:
- They realized that the word expiry had existed for many years and that heads of institutions understood what it meant not until it went to the public domain that it was mis-interpreted and caused anxiety. They proposed that better words be used on the NCHE system/website to replace the word “expiry”. They were requested to make suggestions which they did. These will be considered by Council.
- They also requested for more time to run the programmes before commencing with reviews. They made proposals which will be considered by Council.
- The Forum also made a resolution that the membership should work with NCHE as the regulatory body to ensure that all programmes fit the employability needs locally and internationally.
On Friday 2nd June 2023, NCHE will hold another meeting with Principals of Other Tertiary Institutions to engage them on the same matter. All the proposals will be presented to Council for consideration and decision.
